Hi hi hi. Another Monday but fear not, the Babystack is here to pull you out of your workweek hell. Assuming we’re all mostly on the same page about award shows being deeply washed, but that said I love to watch anything with a high production value, so I found myself streaming the Grammy’s. Was happily surprised to see Tracy Chapman and also Annie Lennox singing Sinead O’Connor 🍉 . Anyway, it’s gonna be a real sweet week here at Baby’s, some singer-songwriter, some #rock, some dance, and everything in between. Come hang out. - Caroline
MONDAY:
KATELYN TARVER (6:30PM) <AA+>
I think Katelyn is so cool, her writing feels so developed! All this to celebrate what will be a really special album. Her cover of Paramore drew me in, then it was Quitter than had me hooked. - Alex
It's like pop music for people that love a well rounded starlet. She's an actress, she's a singer, she's a socialite. Will be a cute little night. - Greg
Sweet, nostalgic pop music that has me wanting to cut out magazine bits and decorate my locker. - Caroline
TUESDAY:
SOFIA WOLFSON (6:30PM) <18+>
Another songwriter with skills rarely matched. The new one is a perfect showcase of Sofia's talents. I had so many friends rave about her set at Sundownstairs (<3 sundown), so I'm sure it'll be a treat to catch at Baby. - Alex
LA Indie Rock Musician who has spent some time on the East Coast. Feels like there is a gravitational pull of some sort... might be a very nice early show on this fine Tuesday in New York City. - Greg
Minimal and truly beautiful song, she’ll fit right in. - Caroline
KNOX (9:30PM) <AA+>
It's really fucking nifty when I get to book something, then see the artist turn into an absolute star in the weeks following. It's even cooler when the agent chooses not to upgrade the venue! Three cheers for Bennett! This'll be one of those shows that navigates the fine line between live room and sauna. The kids love it, and we're all staying up late mom, you can't stop us. - Alex
Sweet little pop songs from this NYC lover big team, big crowd. - Greg
Big gen-z pop-rock. Takes me somewhere. - Caroline
WEDNESDAY:
AL OLENDER (6:30PM) <18+>
Al has a voice from a bygone era. Moments of Karen Carpenter in there? Love it. - Alex
Earnest and sincere story songs from an Upstate NY based singer songwriter whomst is about to go on a big Euro tour. We'll send her off with a smile and a warm show. - Greg
Bouncy, juicy melodies, from a woman who seems like she was raised on Joni and Carole. - Caroline
THURSDAY:
DARRYL RAHN (6:30PM) <21+>
Darryl is a local legend. I feel like I've seen him (literally) running the streets of Wburg 20 times by now. Huge fan of the production on his newest singles, this heater with Free Range does the business for sure. - Alex
Sweet hot boy who lives in the neighborhood. I love running into him - he's definitely a very talented songwriter with an amazing attitude... pretty sure I saw him play guitar on national television once... - Greg
Folksy and easy listening, plus this guy seems to be friends with everyone. Should be a nice time. - Caroline
FRIDAY:
LOCAL WEATHERMAN (7PM) <21+>
Love pulling together a lineup of bands I wanna see. Co-curating with Local Weatherman, who are dropping some absolute bombs (Standing Next To Me on heavy rotation). Sex Week only have one song but it rules. Kierst basically runs Baby's, we'll have her play any show. - Alex
Local rock show featuring support from ex-baby's star turned just regular star KIERST. - Greg
First of three is beloved friends Sex Week, come early to take in this lovely duo’s tender-sexy songs. - Caroline
YEAH! (11PM) <21+>
YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!... YEAH - Alex
Party with a bar mitzvah type artist profile (USHER, etc.) - Greg
My sister likes to remind me that when I was 5, I saw Usher on the cover of a magazine and said he was hot. - Caroline
SATURDAY:
SCHOOL OF SONG (6PM) <18+>
A song writing course that just seems like the purest force for good. I mean, of course it is, we were linked to them via Alex Harwood, a pure force for good. If Adrienne shows, we'll cry. - Alex
Should be packed little time celebrating school of song which is hosted this season by Adrienne Lenker... - Greg
At least 15 people I know did this workshop (apparently 20,000 people did in total) and loved it. I can’t imagine this being anything but wonderful. - Caroline
FUNDIDO (11PM) <21+>
There is no better party. - Alex
10-Year Anniversary for everyone's favorite party Baby's has ever had... I'm excited!!! - Greg
It’s Saturday night, where else would you be? - Caroline
Last Nite.
A friend of the Babyverse tells us about a cool show they went to.
Andrew, aka Tall Anj of Run For Cover Records, tells us all about the Naked Brother Band Nat and Alex Wolff show last week that you soooorely missed.
I was 11 years old when The Naked Brothers Band first aired on the slime time TV network Nickelodeon. I used to watch it at a friends house in-between sessions of Guitar Hero 2, where recordings of new-to-me songs like Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” and Avenged Sevenfold’s “Beast and the Harlot” would start to re-wire my brain into becoming a music rock lover (for better or worse, respectively). If you told 11 year old me in 16 years I’d be in Brooklyn surrounded by close friends celebrating one of their birthdays, while in the same building famous Oppenheimer-actor Alex Wolff and his Naked Brothers Band brother and singer Nat would be playing their songs live to a soldout crowd, I’d have a lot of questions (probably including who is Oppenheimer). I can’t say I’ve kept up with the brothers musical output over the years, so I was unfamiliar to their new soulful indie sound, but when they mid-song went into a quick medley of their childhood TV show’s theme song, and then into Naked Brothers Band smash hit “Crazy Car”, I watched my close friends recognize what was happening, and pull out their phones to gleefully take videos. As I sat there watching the scene unfold in front of me, of my beloved homies sharing this hilarious unspoken connection of niche young millennial nostalgia, I couldn’t help but think “If that’s not friendship, then what is?”
This Week At Baby’s Official Playlist
and, just for fun, a hauntingly sweet ballad from Threshold ft. Colle.
