What a beautiful week we have in store for you at your favorite South Williamsburg local independent music venue. - Caroline
MONDAY:
SAWYER HILL (6:30PM) <AA+> Deep grungy voice for pop star in the making. There's a song about a broken heart that feels touching and deep. Low voice, for the kids - everyone in the comments saying "Can't believe this hasn't gone full viral" but to me it seems like it has? - Greg
Good golly I didn’t expect that voice! Might make you blush a little - Caroline
Loved seeing this edge towards sellout, great signs for an artist on the rise. Those pipes are unlike any I've heard, especially on a younger artist! Super unique, ready for a special show. - Alex
FREAK HEAT WAVES (9:30PM) <18+> Canadian crew whose name I've been seeing around forever. They have a spark about them; I love this. They were meant to be doing this one with collaborator Cindy Lee, who unfortunately had to pull off tour for personal reasons. I hope everything is ok <3 - Greg
Listen, we’re all bummed about the Cindy tour, but FHW are hardly a consolation prize—they’re the absolute next best thing. Psychy, dreamy, experimental, and absolutely unreal, if you had a ticket for Cindy, definitely still show up, you wont be disappointed. - Caroline
Zap The Planet! was the first Freak Heat Waves record I heard, and I was completely locked in. The mixture of dub, house & post-punk is so unique against the backdrop of everything else going on in music right now. One of the most exciting sets of the year. Sure is a shame that Cindy Lee can't make it through, and to echo Greg's sentiment, wishing them all the best <3 - Alex
TUESDAY:
WILLI CARLISLE (6:30PM) <18+> Some reeeeaalll country music. and pretty popular too to sell this many tickets to a hoedown in the big city. - Greg
I am less than qualified to write about this genre of music but this will have you hooting and hollering - Caroline
Every time we host a country show (hi Dougie Poole) everyone is like "why don't we do more country shows?" Come by Baby's on Tuesday to hear everyone be like "why don't we do more country shows?" - Alex
ZOE SKY JORDAN (9:30PM) <21+> Airy and beautiful music from Toronto, Canada. This song is nice to listen to on this foggy morning. Supported by Sofia Wolfson who is new to NY but already everywhere. - Greg
Another win for Canada? This song is so beautiful and heartwrenching that it aches a little to listen to it at 8:33AM as I write this. - Caroline
Zoe and Sofia building a truly beautiful soundtrack for a post-country baby. - Alex
WEDNESDAY:
MIKI RATSULA (6:30PM) <AA+> Oh that's nice music. Super sweet and sad. Pop music for the young queers who might love a "Boy Genius" type of song. Grace Gardner is supporting, who offers some nice additional texture to the musical evening. - Greg
Definitely sweet music that hits big with the tenderqueer kids. It’s good. - Caroline
Miki has some wonderful songs already. This one with OSTON hit me immediately. It's going to be an awful pretty and powerful show. - Alex
NITEFIRE (9:30PM) <18+> Kind of like cool person music for a younger crowd. Supported by Monobloc and Eric Carney's new project, Patiently! - Greg
So I just wanna eat crow here and say I called these guy “local legends” when I announced it on IG. They’re like, very much from LA. Sorry about that. - Caroline
Feels like a taster of things to come, three rising hitters coming together for a Wednesday late slammer. Have had friends from multiple continents ask me to check out Monobloc here. - Alex
THURSDAY:
ZEP (6:30PM) <AA+> Nearly impossible to google without getting other bands or tribute bands of that other band. But searching "Zep TikTok" did it!! I found this and get why they need two drum kits - it's a party =) - Greg
Two drum kits is always an eyebrow raiser but honestly I get it, this sounds like a good reason for one - Caroline
Unique and energetic, rhythmic and exciting. Going to be a heater! - Alex
FAZERDAZE (9:30PM) <21+> This feels like one of those artists Alex sent me an album from and said "You will really like this". It's true, I do really like it. NZ artist coming over, lovely team and PERFECT support in Rockstar Mei Semones, who just had a show at Baby's that the staff simply cannot stop talking about. Perfect evening. - Greg
Found out about this artist a few years ago through the kind folks over at Partisan and was smitten. Easy listening, grungy indie fun. With Mei up at the front of this bill, it’s gonna be a fantastic night for peopel who like good fucking music! - Caroline
I managed to catch the return of Fazerdaze while back in Australia in October, and the show ruled. Longtime fan of this project, have been looking forward to this for yonks. This'll sellout by Thursday, you've been warned. - Alex
FRIDAY:
SHABOOZEY (7PM) <18+> okay okay okay, this one sold out in seconds flat because this person is a giant new star. Not only have I heard this song everywhere for the last few months, he also is featured on TWO fuccking Beyonce songs. - Greg
Yes, it’s that song - Caroline
Sold out to a dumb number, but wait til you see the waitlist.... When was the last time someone hopped on the express train from Baby's to MSG? @JackHarlow? Don't say it... - Alex
BEYONCE NIGHT (11PM) <21+> Kind of fitting this comes after the first show, no? ALmost like it's well planned... - Greg
She won’t be there. Maybe one day Beyonce will come to our humble little bar and enjoy a quesadilla. - Caroline
Move Forward is crushing it at the moment. Beyonce night after a Beyonce feature artist? Great stuff. - Alex
SATURDAY:
BUDDY (7PM) <18+> Rapper from America even though this video is of him hanging in Japan... this song slaps I love it! Supported by Samara Cyn. - Greg
This song is huge, you’ll wanna hear it. - Caroline
New album dropped at the end of March, and it keeps getting better. Will push sellout by Saturday. - Alex
HERMANOS GUTIERREZ (11PM) <21+> Legend is back, no words to describe, love. - Greg
Alex told me this one is “mandatory attendance.” - Caroline
Ludicrous. Hermanos popping over after their Steel show for a legendary DJ set. This'll be a true heater, running it back after arguably the late night highlight of 2023. - Alex
Last Nite.
A friend of the Babyverse tells us about a cool show they went to.
Ok I got Logan back because frankly, I just delight in his writing, and we should all be so lucky as to absorb it wherever we can!
Do you know about GUNK? GUNK likely knows about you. GUNK, the monthly print-and-Substack newsletter curated by Ceci and Hana of sister., aims to list every indie show in the city. It’s an essential read (or subscribe) for any aspiring mogul of independent culture – not just for the convenience of reference, but for its growing library of sweet, helpful, and insightful writing, poetry, and interviews. In an increasingly bloated media environment, GUNK is the perfect next-big-small thing. I attribute much of my own social success over the past year or so to its existence.
It is my understanding that moving forward, GUNK will be celebrating each new issue with a monthly party at Baby’s All Right. I attended the inaugural edition of this party on Friday – paired alongside incredible sets from Skullcrusher and Camp Saint Helene – and was richly rewarded with conversation, dance, and even an invitation to join an exciting new record label/cult. More on that next time.
More than all this, however, GUNK wants you to know about the fish burrito at Babies. Have you ever tried the fish burrito at Babies? It's F-wording good. In our increasingly expensive and unreasonable dining landscape, the menu at Baby’s All Right serves as a bastion of reliably affordable and fortifying food for bohemian artists and fine diners alike. The fish burrito, prepared with love and [AWAITING SPECIFICS RE: PREP / ON-RECORD FOLLOW-UP FROM KITCHEN AND/OR GREG]*, leaves one feeling satisfied but never stuffe d, ready to take on a full night of show-ogling and mogul-knowing. This critic finds it confusing why anyone in their right mind would opt for, say, an overpriced steakhouse, when just down the street sits a menu which has fueled the world’s greatest independent artists a thousand times over. Surely: if the muses had a cuisine, this would be it.
*editor’s note, no word from greg. according to our online menu, the burrito is prepared with with cilantro, rice, beans, onion, & salsa by the beloved chefs at Rey de Reyes. Honestly now I really want to try it
