So, yeah, a bit behind on the ole Substack again. I’m sure you all were wondering what was up with us. Long story short, Alex is still in Melbourne freezing his ass off in the dead of Winter, Greg has been running around Spain with the bulls and Tomberlin and me? Well, I got caught up with the epic opening of Billy’s Record Shop (follow right now on Instagram, come Sunday from 10am to 6pm, free beer/coffee/donuts, the best records on planet, cheap for you, tell the world, etc).
But tonight is the night. If you told me in 2002 when I moved to Williamsburg that someday Alex would book Blonde Redhead to play my little music club on Broadway the week I opened a record store I’d say that yes, the Acid was definitely working, thank you, but are you sure it was just one dose on that tab?
I mean, at the time, you couldn’t go into Verb cafe on without hearing Kyp from TV on the Radio or Chris from Grizzly Bear (both worked there) frothing milk (pre-latte art) while Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons played at a very chic volume in the background.
Anyway the show tonight is long sold out but I’m using this post to encourage you right now if you’ve never got into Blonde Redhead before, open a new tab and put them on while you quickly skim thru the rest of this posting. You can thank me later!
P.S. First 20 customers to Billy’s Record Shop Drop this Sunday receive a Baby’s slip mat free of the charge.
WEDNESDAY:
BLONDE REDHEAD with Sweet Lightning and Purr (7PM) <21+> - “Not sure what to say here that hasn't been said. Blonde Redhead are an ALL TIMER for myself, and most of our team. This, this, and this. They're new one too, signs of a band not slowing down. Sweet Lightning are my favourite new band, and Purr (new record out on ANTI-) are back!!!! Gosh.” - Alex
“Iconic night at Baby's All Right. One show evening with the legendary Blonde Redhead - Alex has been trying to lock this one in for a looong time and it has finally come to fruition. Should be a night to remember!!! Really sweet TM/FOH guy Jeff. I feel like this will be a lovely night.” - Greg
“See above and I love Purr so much.” - Billy
THURSDAY:
CATIE TURNER (630PM) <AA+> “We do love a TV pop star at the Baby. Catie joins a long line of banger shows in the field, and her voice refuses to miss.” - Alex
“An American Idol contestant who broke out with her own singer/songwriter music. Vibe is Pop.” - Greg
“What season? I’m way behind.” - Billy
KASSA OVERALL (930PM) <21+> “Have you heard the new record on Warp? Look at those FEATURES. Danny Brown, Wiki, Theo Croker, Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula, Shabazz Palaces. That's a scary room of talent. Who will show up on Thursday? Only one way to find out...” - Alex
“Jazz-head percussionist. Really cool music. Expecting an older more sophisticated crowd.” - Greg
“After just reading both Alex and Greg’s words above I think this is a show for me. Will clear calendar now.” - Billy
FRIDAY:
AMY SHARK (7PM) <AA+> Amy follows Alex Lahey's lead, on "Aussies selling Baby's TF out". Her voice is magnetic, and Adore is two clicks away from being Australia's national anthem. Much better than the trash Australia's running with already. Let's go.
“Triggered by anything Shark right now. I read they are getting closer to the shore. I may not go in this season.” - Billy
*BONUS*
Baby’s Presents BAR ITALIA with Chanel Beads and the ION PACK (8PM) <18+> Way beyond SOLD OUT. This isn’t happening at Baby’s. IYKYK of whatever.
SATURDAY:
SCHOOL OF ROCK (12PM) <AA+> “The kids are all right! School of Rock Williamsburg making EVERYONE smile and feel good about life, once again.” - Alex
Tanerelle (7PM) <18+> “Yes, a true Move Forward Music banger once again. Tanerelle's a "space age songstress" who's worked with everyone from Spike Lee through to Issa Rae. Startlingly good.” - Alex
HOT HONEY (11PM) <21+> “An old, dear friend of the venue. Hot Honey is an LGBTQ+ Burlesque Dance Party, and when we say it is a party, we ain't mincing our words. Come figure it out for yourself.” - Alex
SUNDAY:
BAD MOVES (6:30PM) <AA+> “Bad Moves are rolling off a big sellout at The Broadway (shoutout Jack Kerwin), and this has some juice to it too. It's music with tones to smile too, maybe a respectful mosh. Choose your own adventure, just have fun.” - Alex
“D.C. LEGEND David Combs of Spoonboy; promoter and booker from our nation's capital. Always punk and always all ages. This is his power-pop outfit that is honestly so good.”- Greg
