I’m doing that thing I do where I listen to the Reznor/Ross soundtrack from the Social Network to palette cleanse in prep for this week of Live Music. I find myself in the perplexing position of needing to be at the venue (or the corresponding bb presents locale) every night, sometimes in two places at once, so I’m gearing up for that.
As you know, our faithful reader, Baby’s is the place to share in the collective joy that Live Music brings. This has been the feeling since we opened our doors in 2013 and what will forever make Baby such a special place in all our hearts. We’re here for you and thanks for being here for us! - Caroline
before we get to the meat, a disclaimer from our very own production maestro, Greg.
Look, i'll be real, I'm upstate right now watching Casino and trying to get a bunch of big projects working. I don't have time to do my little youtube thing and this week i'm judging off notes from Alex, how the advances feel, and what the press pictures look like (feeling).
MONDAY:
ETHAN REGAN - shoes-off beach campfire music. Scurrying towards a sellout here. - Alex
He looks like the guy that makes leather goods in Ridgewood out of his beautiful open garage door workshop. Selling well for a cute little sweet angel time. Soft. - Greg
Definitely have heard this one in my older brother's truck when he's tapped into his Pandora Radio. No doubt this is music for outdoors-y types. - Carson
Delicate, lovely music for people who think they should move to Colorado (maybe you should!) - Caroline
SOFIE ROYER - Sofie Royer kicks off our week of left-field pop from faraway lands. Stones Throw star, with a new record that'll have y'all moooovin' - Alex
Definitely gives pop star in the making in a cool way... Stone's Throw. Wouldn't be shocked if she was world famous in a year. - Greg
I love the classically-informed musician to pop star pipeline, and I also love Stones Throw Records and anything that Peanut Butter Wolf touches. So, naturally, I love Sofie Royer's music.... She's collab'd with Toro Y Moi, opened for Lana Del Rey, Air and LCD Soundsystem and now she's bringing her rlly fun dance pop to Baby's. Obviously going to be the best time :-) - Carson
I, too, forget I’m so young! VErY cool Vienna based alt-pop, celebrating the release of her third LP. New York it-boys and hair models Rebounder up first. - Caroline
TUESDAY:
FLOWEROVLOVE - We've been nearly, maybe, almost there on several occasions with flowerovlove, so it feels GREAT to have them in the room now. Another show careening towards the sellout line, this was the one that hooked me. - Alex
Okay pop art, so cool, so exciting, so fun!!! - Greg
Bedroom Pop Star x Gucci Model. About to sell out! - Carson
Oh yay this is so fun, it’s bouncy and feel-good and juicy. - Caroline
FABIANA PALLADINO - This is exciting! Fabiana's NYC debut, a true star in the making. Feels like an important show, and you know what? We just released 10 more tix, so jump in fast!* - Alex
*editor’s note, said tickets dusted after mere moments. sorry!
Big deal for people that like really good music. Alex called me earlier and said "This is s a show I really care about" I just had a fun phone call with her sweet British TM where I said "it's okay darling, the show is going to be great, everything is going to be so cute" He sounded relieved. Also yes... Palladino as in fucking Pino's child... so cool - Greg
This is probably going to be one of the coolest shows I'll go to all year. Clearly Jai Paul is all over this record. Very clean 80s pop and RnB inspired production. Big time sold out show! - Carson
This is fucked up cool. It’s …transcendent honestly, and delctable and sultry and shimmery. I diiiiig. - Caroline
BABY’S PRESENTS: SQUID at DROM
Can't believe this one is happening. One of the coolest young bands out of the UK right now playing in a very small room that I've yet to step foot in. I'm still trying to figure out how my body can be in two places at one time. - Carson
Baby Presents via Warp recs. I have nostalgic fondness for this single, listening to it on those mean streets of our nation’s capitol, where I lived when it came out. Self proclaimed “anxiety rock,” it’s quirked up and bangin’ and I’m excited to see how it’ll feel in that room. I’ll be up front doing that thing i do, if you want your pic snapped. - Caroline
WEDNESDAY:
THE WRECKS - Bunch of handsome fella's with a stadium production, and music for arenas. Kids, plz don't block the entryways to our neighbors apartments when you start lining up at 11AM. - Alex
They have one of those names where you just know... - Greg
Clean cut pop rock with a big production. - Carson
You know this one! This sold out faster than you can say “pretty boy pop.” - Caroline
THURSDAY:
MARGAUX - Truly a dream lineup. Margaux and Lily released two of my favorite records of the year, and Renny shot me his next one and it is remarkable, this song especially. - Alex
Margaux is one of those songwriters I found earlier in the year where I just went "fuck, this person is so good at every single thing they do." I knew she was a perfect bass player in every single project ever known, but when the rollout for the album "Inside The Marble" began I was blown away. There is this song that you simply must hold onto if you went through a breakup this year (didn't we... all, actually????) It's the way you want it to be, hopefully the way it can be. It broke my world wide open. SO excited for this show and we have LILY SEABIRD (another one... what's up with this song?? It's perfect? A show of stars???) and Renny Conti (he's so good... he's so handsome, he's so sweet - all things people actually say about him and are actually true.) - Greg
Vermont gang rises up yet again. I always love to see Lily, even though she hates my cat, and Alas is a wonderful, wonderful record. I just formally met Margaux the other week and she is so sweet. Adding Renny to this show is just unfair. His new record is going to floor you when you hear it. Too much good music and friendship in one show :-) - Carson
What a delightful bill! I love Margaux’s latest record, it’s moody and peppered with beautiful strings and melancholia. I adore Lily, and any night I can see her live is a great night to me. This track is a personal fav. Renny is a baby’s beloved, and my beloved coworkers have got me stoked to hear his new stuff. - Caroline
FINOM - Love this band, this record was a big isolation listen for me. The Work Wife EP from earlier this year is fantastic, I love Meredith's lyrics and the production is really wonderful. Looking forward to catching Meg Elsier's NY debut too! - Alex
Oh my god I just realized this is OHMME... fuck HAHAHA I am going to this no matter what that band fucking rocks. They did a baby tc and Nnamdi was drumming... getting that cosign was crazy, but the three of them were a perfect band through the screen during the pandemic. SO hyped. - Greg
I'm convinced that this band does harmonies better than anyone else out there. Work Wife is opening, which means I get to hang out with Meredith and Caleb too hopefully, which I love. - Carson
Icons, undeniably. The vocal chemistry between these two is just spectacular. - Caroline
FRIDAY:
BARR BROTHERS - Really beautiful guitar work here. I wasn't super familiar, but I've since grown to frequently enjoy this one - Alex
Folk band from Montreal (already you know that means they're super hot). - Greg
These guys have been making top notch folk rock for a very long time. They really dig deep into Appalachian folk and dabble with some contemporary classical and experimental shit too. The end product is fantastic. I'd call it real mature music. Music to ponder to. Their KEXP session is quite goated. - Carson
This is vverrrrry beautiful music, apt for the changing of the seasons. Had a song on the Iron Claw soundtrack, so you know it’s gut wrenching! - Caroline
DANG - Dang, Dang is back! - Alex
Pauz Presents, DANG!!!!!!! (Yeah, yeah) - Greg
A dance party inspired by the sounds of Channel Tres, Kaytranada, Tyler The Creator and more. That sounds good to me! - Carson
This is reminding that me I had a dream about Tyler, the Creator last night. I’m not going to describe it, not because it’s vulgar, but because nothing is less interesting than me describing my dreams to you right here right now. - Caroline
BABY’S PRESENTS: TOMMY LEFROY at HEAVEN CAN WAIT
Big time sold out show at HCW. You know them from their slot opening for Niall Horan. Bright, experimental pop-rock for ya. - Caroline
SATURDAY:
PEAER - When I moved to NYC from Australia back in 2019, one of my friends told me to go see Peaer for him. So I did, I went to Peter's launch at Trans Pecos in July '19. I'm so glad I did. I've been hooked ever since. Celebrating the five year anniversary of the launch of that same album, and the ten year anni of 'the eyes sink into the skull'. - Alex
Peter is family here, and honestly family forever in so many ways. Guitar God and resident kind sweet boy. Perfect band and we have Pet Fox supporting. Did you know Theo lives in the city now??? We're all blessed, this band is amazing, this show is amazing. - Greg
I could go on and on and wax nostalgic and get all sappy about this one, but I won't. I probably would not be doing what I'm doing now had I not heard Peaer's music in 2016. Since then Peter's become a dear friend and I'm so excited to hear his new music. Perfect little songs for anyone who loves David Bazan, Bedhead, and the drumming on The Lonesome Crowded West. - Carson
I’m from Massachusetts, so of course I adore Peaer. A Healthy Earth will forever hold a tender place in my heart. I’m utterly thrilled to hear there’s new music in the works here. - Caroline
MERMAID CHUNKY - Bringing the conclusion of our international pop week! Mermaid Chunky are the newest signing to DFA, and this shit is gloriously weird. I feel like baby's will be a sweaty, steamy, foggy pit of joy. Late night, all right. The legend Brutus VIII on direct support. - Alex
NEW DFA BAND Brought to us by Brutus VIII (everyone's favorite show, or my favorite show at least) Going to be a hot late show this Saturday (I will actually be there). - Greg
Hell yeah. Bizzarro art pop duo recently signed to DFA Records. DFA is going to roll deep into this show with some surprise DJs in tow. Brutus VIII opens. Gonna be a wild one. - Carson
Oh yeah I’m moving to this. “Ride that pony, smack that booty!” - Caroline
SUNDAY:
BIXBY - Feels like a minute since we last had someone from the emo-hyperpop fraternity through Baby's! This is a good one, bixby's got some jams. - Alex
Dance Electro Emo Soundcloud??? Hyperpop vibe, love. - Greg
Woah. - Carson
My dear friend Matt is on the mgmt team here, so I’m excited to support the homies. First saw the bix a few years back when he was only 17 (!) to a sold out and enthusiastic crowd of youngsters in the baggiest pants I have ever seen. I’m sure Sunday nite will be no different. - Caroline
CISCO SWANK - We love Cisco Swank. By my count, his fifth performance at Baby's. This one's gonna be a special one too, I can feels it. - Alex
IT'S THE WEEK OF BABY FAM BANDS. Cisco Swank is so good and basically a resident, plus Elijah is in it... I love this week. - Greg
The smoothest jazz, neo-soul, and indie-pop. L-o-v-e what this dude is doing. - Carson
Undeniably one of the greatest to be doing it rn. - Caroline
This Week At Baby’s Official Playlist
and, just for fun, one from Ora Cogan.
