Well here we all are and honestly I am not feeling particularly verbose! Here’s music stuff for you. Honestly great week at Baby’s, music for lovers. - Caroline
MONDAY:
BRADLEY SIMPSON (6:30PM) <AA+> Okay at first I was thinking he was like a new John Mayer, but then it went straight into listening to the radio in my parent's car while growing up. Not what I expected but made me feel nostalgic and innocent again... thank god. I needed that. A little light in a dirty little world??? - Greg
Of The Vamps fame. This show sold out in maybe 4 seconds? - Caroline
Pop rock for the kids and their parents, swoons incoming. His pics make me think he's the fourth Jonas. - Alex
TUESDAY:
BABEHOVEN (6:30PM) <18+> I know this band I see this band I hear this band, with support from Philly's own rock and roll legends Knifeplay (hot band). This night is going to be one for the homies, for the books, lovely crowd, good music, smiles and laughter. I hope Papa Mike is coming but he hasn't asked for a guestlist spot yet so he probably is not =( - Greg
I fell in love with this music when I heard Fugazi, and it’s only developed since, into beautiful, heartwrenching music about community and love and family and stuff. Maya and Ben really do put hope in my heart. - Caroline
More than once I've had someone tell me this is their "album of the year" so far. 'Ella's From Somewhere Else' is a banger, I sent it to Ella while she was in LA. It seemed funny at the time, but I'm now realizing it didn't make a ton of sense. - Alex
NISA (9:30PM) <21+> I saw this band at Baby's for the first time maybe 2 years ago and was absolutely enthralled. So happy to see them come back any time. The early show will bleed nicely into this late one. Only sweeties here. - Greg
Very fun track, easy to dance to. - Caroline
How many times do you need to headline Baby's to become family? A Nisa amount sounds right. Every time she makes new fans behind the bar, and the one's in front of the bar keep growing. - Alex
WEDNESDAY:
ROSIE TUCKER (6:30PM) <18+> I guess it's just homies week at Baby's All Right. Catchy Catchy Catchy... Supported by our very own darlings, Bloomsday. I think all staff must be in attendance, love always. - Greg
Feels like summer!!! - Caroline
Another scorcher of a new record, Rosie's voice is brilliant, and this reminds me of all the music I was obsessed with at 17, when I'd just discovered Rilo Kiley (things take a while to get to Australia, ok?). - Alex
THURSDAY:
BEL (6:30PM) <18+> This is so nice - love a nice bop my head moment while writing the security forecast turned baby's substack run down for the upcoming week. SEX WEEK is opening - anything that Richard is in has got to be good, and I just met the other homie in the band last week... from Hawaii??? I wish I was in hawaii right now. Needless to say only beautiful kind cuties are coming to this one, won't you join? - Greg
Richard and Pearl have played so much at bb lately, and each time more and more people comment on how fantastic and refreshing the project is. This SONG. - Caroline
I was talking to Ben Frigeri for years about getting BEL to headline Baby's. Always stoked to see something like this come to fruition. Her new music keeps getting better. - Alex
VONTEE THE SINGER (9:30PM) <21+> MFM Presents the sounds of the summer with Cash Cobain. So cool... - Greg
Production here is great, delivery is strong. Exciting stuff, MFM co-pro - Alex
FRIDAY:
CAMP SAINT HELENE (7PM) <21+> A release show for this band + support from mega star/medieval warrior turned star Skullcrusher (JK this is the link - love Helen). GUNK MAG (our current time's SHOWPAPER) is DJing up front so you know it'll be a lovely and perfect night. I'll be there =^) <3 - Greg
I know you know this song and I have reason to believe you’ve cried to it, too. - Caroline
Dreamboat double act. CSH new music is heavenly. Ethereal, layered with moments of Beach House almost? Skullcrusher was on all my 'pandemic walk' playlists. Places/Plans my pick of the bunch. - Alex
LEE CASH (11PM) <21+> Always a good time, bbb - Greg
Lee and Kai throw absolute HEATERS. FREE ENTRY NO EXCUSES COME BOOG - Alex
FRONT BAR: GUNK LAUNCH (6PM) Caroline & I met with Ceci and Hana to discuss getting Gunk at Baby's, after seeing it all around the Bloomsday launch at Roberta's. Wonderful people doing the Lord's work, documenting all their fave upcoming shows in a calendar format, and including essays from local legends like angel Dawood. We're launching their May edition in the Front Bar from 6PM Friday, it's free and y'all should come hang ! - Alex
SATURDAY:
LEVITATION ROOM (7PM) <18+> Nice lovely sound from LA. Makes sense "oh oh" music with a snare drum that sounds like a piece of paper (in the good way) warm, relaxed I'm relaxed. - Greg
Smooth and floaty psych rock. Support from Stevenson Ranch Davidians, made up of members of Brian Jonestown Massacre. Cool show alert ya! - Alex
AFRODESI (11PM) <21+> New party from FurtadoGlobal... let's see what they got! - Greg
Arty is of impossibly good taste, so I bet this one will be a good good good time. - Caroline
Arty brings us Afrodesi, full venue stomper. - Alex
SUNDAY:
ABBY SAGE (6:30PM) <18+> When talking about the programming in May at Baby's All Right, almost everyone says they are most excited for this show. Spent some of my life watching this music video and enjoyed myself! - Greg
Sooo much buzz about this show. This song is huge. I have a feeling she’s about to get even bigger. I really love her voice. - Caroline
Future superstar, Milk had me immediately. It'll push sellout, but if I need to convince you to buy a ticket on a whim, I think this'd be my tip. You won't get many chances to see her in rooms like this. - Alex
MIKAELA DAVIS (9:30PM) <21+> Do I somehow know this person? I kind of feel like I do for some reason. Good songs out on Kill Rock Star (cool). Ok doing some research and she is my age (ageless) and from Rochester, so I feel like there is a good chance I do know her. She also seems to have played in Phil Lesh & Friends, which is a band my cooked ass (deep fried) first cousin Scott Guberman played keys in or plays keys in... hard to keep track. He used to work in a tie die factory and now plays keys with a grateful dead. Hope you're well cuz!!! Back to the show... should be beautiful! - Greg
I had Cooper and Katie from Van Vreeland asking about this one, which is a great sign to me. Mikaela is clearly for the heads, this one reminds me of simpler times (the weekend) - Alex
Last Nite.
A friend of the Babyverse tells us about a cool show they went to.
You know him, you love him, now you get to feel a show through his words, it’s Greg Rutkin re: PACKS!
There was no question as to whether or not I’d go to this one. Packs has a power about them. It was Canada Night at Baby’s All Right, and although I did speak to a certain famed DJ (or two) about the physical differences between people from Toronto and people from Montreal, everyone was beautiful and so very talented. I think if you “make it out” of Canada, you have to be good.
Packs was supported by our very own dear angels, Why Bonnie, who I’ve been a fan of since I was working at a chocolate shop down the street from Baby’s and accidentally saw because they were playing with my coworker Peter. Jesus, Blair has a power about her and even through her illness and broken voice you could tell that she was always meant to be a star. Plus, I know how hard it was for Chance to get away from his Giant Hot Dog that spews confetti twice a day out of a little hole in it’s tip job he’s been doing that no one understands, so the band rocked despite all the obstacles in front of them.
Then PACKS went on - wow. They sound so good. Texturally they have a vibe that I cannot explain. The room was so packed (ugh, I’m sorry for this lame almost pun) that Manager Manuel had to drop the wall for their set. I was sitting up at the balcony with Leslie and Adam and someone who looked really familiar next to us but I couldn’t place it. Anyway, the band raged on and I hope they had fun because everyone there sure should have (if you didn’t, call me).
When we were transitioning between shows I left Leslie and Adam outside, and when I came back Leslie was more excited than I’ve ever seen anyone be because YES people, BECK made eye contact with her. It was Beck all along, Adam knew, Packs knew, Leslie found the fuck out.
Late show was so cool - Montreal??? What’s going on up there, seriously. I’m in love with Amelia and Marie, unfortunately. Who needs another crush in their lives? Take one or two of mine, for god’s sake, please. The night raged on, we all felt merry and went to bed with warmth in our tiny little hearts. <3
This Week At Baby’s Official Playlist
